The day AI walked into my accounting job

The day AI walked into my accounting job

How artificial intelligence is transforming the way I work — and why it's good news for my clients.

It started with a spreadsheet

I used to spend three hours a week typing VAT invoices into spreadsheets. It was tedious, error-prone, and honestly, a poor use of anyone's time.

Then I built a small Python script to do it for me in three minutes.

What changed

AI and automation didn't replace my job. They gave it back to me. Instead of spending Monday mornings keying data, I now spend that time reviewing anomalies, spotting risks, and actually talking to clients.

The difference is enormous — not just in efficiency, but in the quality of advice I can give.

What it means for you

If you're a small business owner, this matters. When your accountant isn't buried in admin, they have more capacity to:

  • Spot tax-saving opportunities you'd otherwise miss
  • Review your numbers with fresh eyes
  • Give you proactive advice, not just reactive compliance

The fear is misplaced

I hear it often: 'Won't AI replace accountants?' My answer is no — at least not the good ones. AI handles the repetitive. Accountants handle the judgement. And judgement is exactly what your business needs.

The accountants who will struggle are those who refuse to adapt. Those who embrace it? They'll do the best work of their careers.
